Inspiration can come from the unlikeliest of places. Some images are born of sunsets and laughter, some are lurking in the darkest recesses of your psyche, this one came from a porn film. It was hung on the wall behind the actresses. I don’t know who the original artist is or what the piece is called but it was far more interesting than the actual porn was, which effectively ruined or saved the scene, depending on your view point of what you thought you’d be watching. This is less than half the original image and I’ve had to invent the bits that were obscurred by… by erm… y’know… that were obscurred.

The front cover of Time magazine showed the same shot but with one man clambering over the rubble. In the actual story it turns out the man was trying to find his house. Not stuff FROM his house but his entire HOUSE. I couldn’t get my head around it. Such was the desire to do true justice to the power of the original image that I collaged some of the photography into my painting to try to get the impact for the potential viewer to be the same as it had been for me when I first saw it.
All that we build we tear down.
