The right hand side to this picture, looks like a shadow of….?
There was a short gap of about a week or two between the two paintings, during this time my grandfather died of pneumonia after suffering chest complaints for many years. “Every Single Street” was not specifically a conscious response or reaction to this event, but my Father commented while I was painting it that I seemed to have slipped back into painting ‘dark’ pictures. Some form of mourning perhaps…. While I was completing the end of the street, a shape began to emerge quite accidentally that I thought looked like a man in a long trench-coat. I never saw my Grandfather wear anything like this but when the man-shape first appeared I though about my Grandfather and decided to keep the shape in the picture just in case. I’m not sure what it’s in case of. So there is maybe a man at the end of the street who may or may not be my Grandfather but makes me think of him every time I see the painting.
